The Manual Keeper - Why we welcome its return

From Ali Al Habsi to Gianluigi Buffon, goalkeepers are those we have no choice but to place our trust in as the last line of defence during our team’s relegation or promotion battles, cup runs and all important derby wins. Unfortunately, no matter the keeper, they’re all prone to the occasional hair-tearingly frustrating moments of buffoonery that can end up costing the match. As a video game, PES too can be a sufferer of this problem.

Konami, however, introduced the manual keeper in an attempt to combat this some time ago. But why is it a useful tool to have? We asked PESFan referee Keenandinho, one of the strongest advocates of the manual keeper you'll ever find, why it’s such an important feature to have.

“Many of you will be reading this thinking, "What is Manual Keeper and why should I care?" and, frankly, you would be quite within your rights to do so, as it was something that Konami never really shouted from the rooftops about.

It was a feature in all previous PES games (but mysteriously removed from PES2009) and could be activated at any point in the match. As the name suggests, it allowed you to take control of your keeper and position him manually when you thought you could do a better job. It's something that's been well used within the higher skilled ranks for a few years now due to the huge defensive advantage it can give.

I have been for lack of a better word, campaigning, to have this reinstated all year (as shown here) and I can't tell you how delighted I am to hear of its inclusion in the final version of 2010.

Two examples of why this was so badly missed on PES2009

• The 'near post bug shot'

If players got to certain angles they could put the ball in the near post, and the keeper would just dive and let the shot go in without even attempting to save it.

• 1v1 – the 90 degree shot fake.

When 1v1 vs. the keeper and up close, you could 90 degree shot fake and the keeper would just dive every time, leaving you with an empty net.

Using the Manual Keeper, your keeper won't dive at the first sign of a shot fake and you can cover the near post angles like a normal keeper would, saving you countless goals all because of your own skill and ability to read the play - not because the AI would decide to 'just let it in' or save it due to being on superman pills.

Manual Keeper is something that goes back to the very roots of PES: It has to be mastered. You can’t learn it in one day; hell, you’ll be lucky to be good at it within a month. It is something of a culture shock the first few times you use it, and anyone new to it will understand exactly what I mean when the game comes out. In all likelihood you'll completely screw it up for the first weeks, but you will eventually learn to take control of the keeper; how to position him, how to out-think the striker, when to rush, how to narrow the angle, and so on. Once you've mastered these you can really show off by using it to cut out 'back post crosses' and 2 v 1 cutbacks to leave your opponent completely flabbergasted (my personal favourite).

Having this skill forces your opponent to think a hell of a lot more. They can't just go for sweet spots if you know how to position your keeper early enough. They not only have to think about how to get past your defence, but after they get past your defence they can’t just jog past your keeper, shot fake him, go near post or just shoot across the goal without thinking about where the keeper is positioned. Even human players become robotic over time and end up doing the same old things to score - Manual Keeper is 100% guaranteed to save you from more of these goals.”

As an example, here is a video (PES06) of how manual keeper can be called upon to provide that extra level of defence you sometimes lack. Credit to Keenandinho and DukeGuy for recording them. Source: PESFan.com

Eurogamer.de Interview Seabass

Another interview with Seabass here, this time from Eurogamer.de.

In the interview, he talks about a change in approach during development, 360 control and of course, online gameplay

“2009 was not a good year for PES Productions. On the slow search for the perfect balance for one, but surely lost the game superannuated Tokyo's progress from his eyes and had to be unanimous, according to press enter over the second thoughts out of the house once eternal EA beaten. The Canadians had simply done more for the game and was able to flay's technically especially tidy impression. For 2010 we want to restore the "normal" again, and set with PES once again the benchmark in terms of football.

We have for you, with Shingo Takatsuka, the mastermind behind Pro Evolution Soccer to entertain. 'Seabass' about new beginnings, zone defense and realism.

Eurogamer: You're this year in a new situation. Last year was all the world that Fifa had overtaken PES. What effect did this have on the development of PES 2010?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: We saw this a bit differently. In our opinion, FIFA was better last year than we did. They have not caught up. They were much better. Of course, our site is important, as FIFA is good or not, but that's not the point. Much more shocking for us was, however, as the PES-user thought. We have seen that they were not happy with PES 2009 and that was much more shocking for us and produced great pressure. Because of these reactions, we owe them a much better game in 2010.

That was the feeling with which we approach the development of PES 2010.

Eurogamer: How did the depressed in development?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: With PES 2009 ended an era. PES 2010 is also for us an entirely new PES, a game that forms the basis of a new generation. We say this because we have changed the way in which we create PES. Until 2009, we have created the game action for action and assembled into a game. That was ok until 2009. But the gameplay became too arcade, action-on.

For PES 2010, we said to ourselves: we must change our approach. We have therefore set in from the front a number of goals: Where are we going, what players we wanted to target and how they should look the matches, and have been working on it. So we have changed the creative process.

Secondly, in PES 2010 we wanted to improve the attack of the players yet, but would not play games, which fall into too many goals. So we have developed a new style of zone defense, which ensures that your results are more realistic.

This type of development we have used the first time in 15 years and therefore we can say that we have with PES 2010 gameplay finally reached the next level. We also have the slider strategies and the card system to the players introduced. These features are also an example of the new approach.

Eurogamer: The 360-degree control has indeed FIFA announced as the first. Now she makes it. How long have you studied this technique already, and what do you think she is doing for Pro Evolution Soccer?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: We actually have long experiment with the 360-degree control. We always thought a lot about when most would be the best timing for it. Only last year we thought it would have been the right time, then this year. We have always thought about the timing - and because FIFA is now also makes, of course, we thought we finally integrate them into our product. But it is not just a fight "Fifa makes it, so we have to." We have always experimented around with it and wanted to make the already quite a while.

In terms of ball control: That you should just try yourself time to figure out how to change the game. I can tell you however that may be observed especially on the side lines is a big change. Where the time the ball went out of bounds, they can be kept in PES 2010, with only a small move, perhaps still in the game. On the other hand, if you are not careful, you can carry the ball with the 360-degree control even easier out of play. You will feel this difference, then, very clearly. Especially on the lines.

Eurogamer: You look yourself a lot of football for research purposes? Therefore, you bring your new ideas?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: Actually I get the main input of it if I PES players may see it while playing. This gives me a different perspective than when I watch real football. I can think of many more things that I could integrate into the game. There is always something to improve. In fact, I even had ideas for the next few years.

Eurogamer: With dribbling superstars could overcome in 2009, the defense is still too easy. How can you stop in 2010, this powerful player?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: players like Ronaldo and Messi, so these dribbler themselves in genuine Football exceptional abilities, so they have in our game. For 2010, we did not want to weaken. Messi is a brilliant player and it would not be fair to reduce its value. Instead, we have renewed the zone defense system. It is our opinion the right way.

In real football Messi is to stop in one-on-one very difficult. But there are examples where such superstars are effectively taken out of play "because the team works together and the players to help out each other in the zone defense.

Eurogamer: Even the goalkeepers were a problem in the last game, right?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: Yes, we have first improved somewhat, so that they can be not so easy this time loaded with tricks. Furthermore, we have the team we have always asked myself why it is so easy to overcome the keeper. Well, in real football, in a one-on-one situation, a completely free attacker a good chance to sink the ball.

Again, we have a little thought differently. We wanted to cooperate, the defenders anymore. So we have the defense system adapted so that a pure one-occur less frequently on-one situations. The defenders will defend the goal always coincided with the keeper to prevent the attack is not so easily have.

Eurogamer: What has changed in the champions league?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: The Master League has visually changed. But this is not the most important. The most important changes stuck in the end. Some in the financial system: If you won a game's predecessors, you got a certain amount of points that were needed to guide the club. This time it's even income from sponsors. If your team goes on a tour that takes you to one more example, just like in real football.

In addition, it was then game over, if you had arrived in the red. This time, we thought, in reality this is not always the case. Even if one falls into the red, you can buy, for example, one player who is so popular, for example, that you get more viewers and thus deserves more money again. I believe this gives the game a larger management component. But there are so many other new things.

We have also integrated the true European league and the Champions League in the real Champions League. We wanted it in the Champions League comes to build, not just the players but also the association. To sum up: It's just become more interesting.

Eurogamer: The online was a problem in the previous game. What will be different this time?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: Online in the past was a problem for us. We have therefore revised the system. To be precise, the PES 2008-360-based version of our favor because we felt that it worked best at the end.

There is also an online community and an online Champions League, are really great. Namely, if one line comes into the knockout stage of the tournament, it's just like in the real Champions League. This is very exciting.

Eurogamer: The game seems to be a little slower overall. Was the basis of realism concerns?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: Yes, that is also connected with that of PES 2010 we changed our approach to development. We have set ourselves some goals at the beginning of development, have analyzed many aspects of real football, and implements this knowledge in the game. The balance of the players speed is a quantity that we have analyzed in great detail.
The thing is this: We need zusammendampfen a game like football that is played over 90 minutes to 10 minutes. So there must be differences in the sequence. Therefore, the flow of the game may seem a little slower to give pure realistic impression of the game.

Eurogamer: Is there a small new gameplay feature is that many people do not notice at first playing, but it is still very important?

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka: This is probably mainly the new zone defense: So far, most attack situations, basically a one-on-one. That has changed now, thanks to the new zone defense. If you want to stop powerful dribbler like Messi you have to slow down their attack just to attack, they may not. In this way we get more support from other midfielders or defenders. This is something that has not previously happened.
I recommend all players as well, Straddle once more. This year, the straddle is in fact quite different. Tried it!”

PES 2010 Edit Mode Preview

"Finally managed to spend some time in edit mode and figure what can and can’t be edited, and what additions we have for this year. After mixing between PES 2009 and PES 2010 to spot the differences in edit mode, you’ll get the full low down on what the game has to offer after the jump.

First of all lets discuss Kits. Like in PES 2009, you have 81 different templates with 4 different layers. While its the same, Konami have updated the templates to accommodate 09/10 designs. So, the new umbro (Everton) and puma designs (Tottenham Hotspur) are easily made.

Another good thing is that the ‘home made’ kits really hold up against the licensed ones. I managed to make the Everton kits for example, and they look as good as the real thing.

Staying with teams, there is now the possibility to have 8 different chants per team! 5 from normal, gameplay moments AND 3 for specific occasions - After you score, taking set-pieces, and after a victory.

Onto player editing. You now, as you are aware of I’m sure, are able to untuck and tuck in shirts. There’s also the return of 4 dribbling animations, the same as the PS2 ones with the next-gen sheen. Unfortunately, you still can edit facial hair.

At the moment these boots are present in PES 2010:

  • Adidas Predator Swerve X-TRX SG White
  • Adidas Predator Swerve X-TRX SG Black
  • F50 Tunit Blue
  • Adidas Adipure Black
  • Nike CTR360 Maestri FG Black/Red
  • Mecurial Vapor Superfly Orion Blue
  • T90 Laser Silver/Black/Red
  • Tiempo Legend FG White/ Blue
  • Puma V1.08 White/Blue
  • Puma V-konstruct III White/Blue
  • Umbro Speciali Black
Then you have 13 slots of random boots, giving us a total of 24 boots. No editable boots then, but I’m very confident the 13 slots will represent them.

Thats all I have right now. Seeing as the code is 75% complete, I’m sure there will be a few more additions to edit mode before release.

We’ll get a full list of teams to you sometime tomorrow, we have to wait for some announcements at Gamescom before talking about licensed teams. Stay tuned!"

PESFan Master League Play Through - Part 1

Ahh, Master League. A jewel in the crown of the PES series both past and present. Having said that, even the biggest fans will have to admit the mode has been going a little downhill in the past few years, and with very little advancement from game to game, was in danger of becoming obsolete.

Then rejoice, my friends, when I say that Master League has been thoroughly upgraded and, dare I say it, is returning better than ever. Why? Well read on, as I take you on a journey spanning literally hours in Part 1 of PESFan’s Master League play through.

Loading up the mode I was instructed, as ever, to select a team to nurture and make my own for the foreseeable future. Having no real ties to the Premiership but liking Martin O’Neill, I chose West Midlands Village.

After setting up how I wanted the league to be formatted (unfortunately there’s still no third division), i.e. 20 teams, goal difference before head to head, the cup not featuring two legs, that sort of thing, I was presented with my given sponsors for the coming season.

Firstly, there was Zaalachsk, a “Dutch Car Manufacturer”, who gave me a deal of £1.4m for 3 years with a home win bonus of 60k. They also promised that if I won three games in a row, they’d provide me with a further 80k, with incremental increases the more I won. Hurrah!

But beware, as they then warned that if I managed to blunder into losing more than five home games during the season my sponsorship deal would be forfeit. Those fiends. I was also given two more sponsors, the first of which was Lesplindu, a French consumer electronics company who granted me 660k a season for 3 years with a 60k win bonus and no cancellation clause. There was also Alpilatteria, an Italian food company, also gave me a 4 year deal worth 800k a year and a 60k win bonus, again, with no cancellation clause. This brought my team funds to £41,785,000.

PES was not done, as I then found out my 28 thousand-strong fan club also came with £4.2m cash for my managerial pocket, bringing the total team funds for the year to just over 46 million. Sounds a lot, but it’s surprising how quickly it disappears.

My coach, athletic trainer, club doctor and scout were all set to lvl 3, meaning I spent 4m on them collectively and my youth team and fan club were set to lvl 2, which meant another 2m. Then, there were my player wages, which came to just over 12m in total.

So before I’d changed anything my team funds for the year were down roughly 18m to 23.7m. Looking for ways to remedy this expenditure, I changed my youth team and fan club to lvl 1, along with my athletic trainer and club doctor. This saved me a few million I’d plan to use on transfers, job done for now.

I set up my formation, a 4-3-3 with Carew up front supported by Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor, and played around with my Team Style settings. After a bit of a think, I ended up going for high player support, attacking style and no compactness or pressing. I called it the ‘Tony Mowbray’ and gave myself another pat on the back.

I also tweaked my training schedules, taking full advantage of Master League’s new ability to change the areas training points are spread about for players who I thought would benefit from it. I told Carew to train mostly in shooting and Ashley Young to focus on dribble speed, for example. I also went on a bit of a spending spree with my newly freed up funds and increased my coach to lvl 4, at the cost of 3m, which also upped the total points I could assign in training slightly.

Anyway, enough with that, my first game was coming up. The football gods must loathe me, as it turned out to involve an away day at Anfield to take on Liverpool. It was a pretty dull game truth be told, although I’m generally a pretty dull player, so there you go. Much to my displeasure, Salifou missed an absolute sitter with the chance at an open goal, instead choosing to blast it completely wide of the post with his first touch. I tell you. He couldn’t finish an egg that lad. Mark Lawrenson suddenly awakened too, spouting, “Well quite honestly, that would have changed the course of the game!”

Thanks for that Mark, I’d missed you.

0-0 at half time, not bad for me if I’m honest. With the second half in full swing however, I managed to score an absolutely cracking goal using Big John Carew, surprising myself, everyone in the ground, and perhaps most startlingly Mark Lawrenson, who had since changed his mind about us and declared it the best goal he’d ever seen.

At the end of the game I was presented with a screen showing the gate receipts from the match, although presumably because I was away this time the number totalled 0. Back on the menu, I had a look at the youth team, and after a brief look at some of their individual stats and a recommendation from my coach that Ximelez was a pacey player, I signed him up on a 222k professional contract.

In the next game I beat Lancashire Athletic 2-0 to progress in the England Cup, but in the game after that Yorkshire Orange humbled me with a 1-0 defeat. Ups and downs to the season thus far, but not a terrible start. The next game was away at Manchester Blues, where it was raining (natch). I scored a lovely goal in this one with a move totalling probably 20 passes or so, and ended up winning the game 1-0. I was also being awarded with gate income from my home matches now, the cup game bringing a mere 80k but the league match earning me a respectable 260k, perhaps an indication that even in PES no one can be bothered with the league cup.

Back to the menu screen and I was presented with a warning that Brad Friedel, my goalkeeper, was unhappy about something. My coach explained further by telling me it was because his contract was expiring, so I gave the cheeky guy a 2 year extension, which seemed to keep him quiet for a while. I don’t know if my team saw this as a sign of weakness, because the turn after this Delfouneso was suddenly unhappy with the position he was being played in. Sigh.

Now, I either had two options with this, the first was to just play him in his natural position or choose to specially train him in the new position at the cost of time and money. Quite a lot of money, too (about 10m), so it’s probably only viable for a team with cash to burn. Or there was the third option, which was to continue and let him sulk. I chose this one, and then dropped him a few games later. You’re not with Martin O’Neill now you know.

Further investigation revealed I could also train a player in the use of a new card, but again, it was too rich for my blood.

A few games later, and I began to notice I’d a) stopped scoring, and b) my players seemed unnaturally fatigued and in bad condition. Fatigue has always been a problem with Master League, the idea that a player can’t play two games in two weeks without becoming absolutely exhausted is a ridiculous one to me, but this was different.

I remembered what I’d done at the start of the season in diminishing the ability of my athletic trainer in favour of increasing that of my coach. Turns out a better athletic trainer deals with fatigue better, as well as increasing the chances of your players being in better condition. I increased him to lvl 4, and in a few games time I started to reap the benefits, even if it did take a chunk from my budget.

Likewise my club doctor seemed quite unable to properly deal with an injury my team had sustained in any reasonable amount of time. The injury was only to Steve Sidwell though, so I left the doctor at lvl 1.

I also liked how your scout gives reports on other teams prior to playing them, for example with West Midlands City “Will probably go all defensive and play 11 men behind the ball.”, I thought it was a nice touch, and true to form, they were exceedingly defensive.

About 6 games into the season and I seemed to not be scoring as much as previously, i.e. at all. I thought a change in tactics was called for, the Tony Mowbray was no longer benefiting me as much as I’d have hoped, so it was back to the Team Styles screen to devise a new pressurising, long ball using, thug team to bully the league from now on.

The Europa League groups were then drawn, and as West Midlands qualified last season, I ended up being put with Villareal, FC Twente, and some other team who I forget and as thus is unimportant to me. When you play a Europa League game it has its own separate background, is all nicely licensed, the competing teams are properly sorted into groups of A-L, and generally feels like a suitably grand step-up from the normal league.

I lost my next two games, as well as getting knocked out of the England Cup by East London. So far my debut season was turning out to be as disappointing as real football is. Who says PES isn’t realistic? The European Footballer Of The Year was then announced, unsurprisingly featuring Messi, C. Ronaldo and Kaka in the top 3 with 550 votes, 480 and 450 votes respectively.

I played on in both my domestic league and the Europa League (a campaign which had ended in disappointment for me by late December) to end up in 7th place in January, feeling encouraged and ready to expand my squad with the look into the transfer market. It would have to wait, however, as Part 1 was up.

Come back tomorrow to read Part 2 of my Master League play through. If you ask any questions about transfers/future ML events, I’ll try and squeeze them in the report tomorrow. Cheers for reading.

Gamescom Only 7 Days Away!

In 7 days, on August 19th, the biggest videogames expo will launch in Cologne, Germany.

Konami will make a big announcement which could be either 360° movement or the implementing of a new physics/animations engine, which is roumored to be the Endorphin Engine.

Make sure to be up-to-date and check the blog for more updates in the next days and especially between the 19th and the 23rd.

The game version available at gamescom should be around 70% completed which means that gameplay is nearly done with graphic, texture and roster updates completing the game.

The gamescom version is usually very similar to the final game so that will be the moment of truth for the PES fans all over the world.

Just to inform you, Konami said that the game version showed in the last trailer about strategies and cards in PES 2010 was from June and the same as the one which was previewed by many magazines back then. That version was around 55% completed.

Some sources say that a guy named Pat from a another blog will be there looking through the windows and will tell us how was it. This is not official. That was a joke. Stay tooned for more real news ...

We will post gameplay videos as well as reviews about the game here on the blog. We will also attend to the press conference and try to report also about new announcements made there.

If you have special questions you want us to answer when we play the game fell free to post them here in the comments.

What Konami says:
"Konami will be presenting a further world premiere with PES 2010. The new game has been developed following months of listening to feedback from fan forums and advice from PES players. Consequently PES Producer Shingo ‘Seabass’ Takatsuka will be visiting gamescom to introduce the results of this unique collaboration to visitors and fans. Seabass is promising to European players that new PES 2010 will be the most realistic and satisfying PES to date.

A few weeks ago Konami announced the Wii version of PES 2010 will be released in the autumn, shortly after the versions for PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360 and PC-DVD. PES Wii Fans will be delighted that Producer Akiyoshi ‘Greyhound’ Chosokabe will also make his way to Cologne to present key advances in the game including new gameplay and advanced graphical elements."

If you are interested in visiting gamescom in Cologne you can find Konami in hall 7.1, booth C30
The press conference will take place on August 19th at 12:00 PM here:

Level7.nu Preview PES 2010

Konami has managed to turn the bottle. Last year's game was a disappointment to many, but during spring and especially summer, they have released photos and information that been talking about PES 2010 to be really positive. FIFA players are talking about changing to PES again, and PES-boycotters considering to return to the series. Now it's just up to the game to deliver.

Not complete code
First and foremost it must be said that the code, I spent four hours with at this point is not clear. Things will be fixed before the launch so that I write from now on can be changed. But do not expect any revolutionary changes.
On the other, we could not test the online mode and for many is the game and with that it works without lagging.

Konami has made an effort
This year, it finally felt that Konami has made an effort. The last three, four, five years, the PES series has in many ways been stamping in the same Well-Proved areas without any special drastic changes. But now, there has been a great changes. The licensing of the European League (formerly the UEFA Cup) and Champions League are two really important licenses that is doing much for the gaming experience. This year is also the first time that the game's menus are translated into Swedish, except some mistakes like Cup is kupp but otherwise it was okay. Even the menus are much nicer and more easy to navigate by now.
Moreover, they added a lot of new Teams and then, believe it or not, Master League has received a major facelift.

After five years - a new Master League
It is really pathetic to read the review of PES4 and realize that nothing has happened with the PES series career mode for five years. What other sports can say that about? But now Konami have actually changed a lot.
You start by choosing a team. You can take the large established team to play with your favorite player or a Crappy team for a little challenge. You can also make your own team with, emblems, costumes, names and stadium and put in your own league. About 20 teams can be edited and added in the league.
After the choice of Team, it is time to choose settings for how the league is going to work, how many cards that lead to a suspension and some other small things with the overall league.

Requirements for Sponsors
Then you get to see a list of the sponsors you got. The contracts will last a number of years and provides a fixed sum, but it can also be a bonus clause that gives you extra money if you, for example, finished third or better in the league, or are unbeaten in 10 matches in a row. There may also be a Clause that makes you lose a sponsor if you get knocked out of the group in Champions League (yes, both Champions League and European League is the Master League). These examples apply to Liverpool. Lower requirements for you if you select a crappier team.

Pay the staff
The economy is a major new part of the Master League. In the addition of sponsors you also get money from the fans membership. The more fans the more money. The money goes of course to the players salaries first, And then on different parts of your staff. Should the club doctors cost 50 000 euro or 10 million? How much should scout activities or the Youth Team get? Each personnel record can get five replacement levels and although I did not have time to test it, I presume that compensation is the quality you get.

New transfer system
Another major innovation is the transfer system. Meanwhile, will enter the Master League just before the season and therefore you have the chance to get any new players just before it's time to go out and play. But it seems not as easy as before. Now the Scouts are very important and without them you will not know what the players have for the values. It is only after a few games that your scouts can tell about the watched players abilities. Moreover it takes some time you receive notice of a contract negotiation. During our quick test of the negotiations, it took about four games before we were told that a player was not interested in a contract with us. It seems disturbing that you doesn't have more control then that, but it must be tested much more before I know for sure.
It is also possible to simulate matches, look at the average of the player to get a quick overview of their ability, determine what an individual player training will focus on the most and hear what a scout has to say about a certain spelare.

Where is Ruskin?
It should also be mentioned that the team to start with no longer contains Minanda, Ruskin and the other crappy players. There is now real players and real teams. But they will be found in the Youth Team from the start where they spend their time before they are ready to get moved up to the A-team. Exactly how this works, we do not know yet. But a reasonable guess is that they develop in Youth Team depending on how much money you spend on their training.

Become A Legend again
Among the other game modes "Become a legend" will return and there seems to be the same as last year, but I only tested the mode for a few minutes.
From the main menu, you can also choose to play a quick match, cups and leagues.

Add audience audio
For those who like to edit teams and players, there are the same amount of hairstyles and faces as last year, you can still take pictures and add a face or emblem and there is still no really full beard. A cool detail is that you now can add about ten audience audio per team to create a little more unique atmosphere at the stadiums.
Graphically, there has been an improvement in the lighting effects and details on many of the players and on the field. Some players are scarry like their selfs, while others are laughable. Olof Mellberg has for some reason has become somewhat unrecognizable and Erik Edman is just weird with a new emo-haircut. The Nets behave about as wierd as before and faces react to things that is happening on the field.

Licence has moved east
When it comes to licenses, Hammarby, AIK, IFK Gothenburg and Kalmar will be in from Sweden. In England, only Manchester United and Liverpool are fully licensed, the rest have wrong Team names and kits. The entire Spanish league is in, but not "a small team who have been fighting" according to Konami. All Italian and Dutch Teams is in, many Russian and several new Eastern European teams, four Greek, three Belgian, some Portuguese, but in this version the German league is very empty. I do not think I saw a single Team. The reason is that EA owns the Bundesliga license.

More FIFA?
So the most important; Feeling on the pitch. It were Konami has been tough. It will probably not feel like an immediate improvement for most who try it for the first time. Players are now a little heavier, a little more physical. It is not as easy to just run through the players that it was in PES 2009, but it is a little slower in the turns. To get away a pass or shot can take a tenth of a second extra to get the players to gain control of the ball or for the animations to catch up with. The players are not quick to change ways in spriting and it's not easy to go from standstill to full speed. It is perhaps more realistic, but it gives a slightly slower feeling on the pitch. I hardly dare to say it, but it is a little more FIFA over the feeling.

The Raven and the goalkeeper
Sometimes, it looks good that the players do not really control the ball in all situations, but it's still too often crappy-player-control of the Premier League players. It is okay if it happens rarely, but my impression of the ten games I played or witnessed is that it happens too often. It happened several times that the player fumbled out the to the sidelines when they tried to receive a long pass, as if they still don't know where the pitch are.
I saw a lot of new animations and physical duels seemed more alive. It happened several times that players stood still, and fought for the ball before anyone came. That bad Sprint-animation from PES 2009 is slightly better now, but still not flexible enough.
One detail that irritated me was that the goalkeeper is extremely slow with passes to the back line from Out-Kick stance. It does not seem that the goalkeeper has become much faster on throwing the ball out either.

New tactics and cards
It is quite clear that you can not just throw yourself into the PES 2010. It is a slightly new feel of the field where you like in FIFA 09 has to be slightly ahead in the tank at all times and pass a little sooner than you think is necessary. The new tactics system also requires careful testing. You can set how much support players to give, how hard the press the team will bring, and much more. It looks good in the menus with clear instructions and animated examples of how it affects the game.
A new card system with various special abilities of the players have also been introduced, but I honestly don't understand so much about it yet. Players can have different abilities as running along the edges, breaking in on goal or something like that. A way to define how they often play on the pitch as like the stars in PES 2009, but exactly how it works, I have to get back to that.

Statistic for games on the Sofa
We could, as I said not to test the online mode, but for you who like to play against friends offline, there are now profiles to save for you and all your opponents to later compare you selfs in all possible statistics. Kind of like the PS2 versions in other words.
Another feature compared to PES 2009 is that the game loads faster now and that we can see the matches presention while waiting. A little, smart trick.
Even the music has improved. It is not the same painful tones from Konamis most sadistic person anymore. There is still much that is created by Konami itself, but it is now a little better productions.

Carefully positive
My gutfeeling is that Konami has made it a little difficult for themselves. We Master League nerds will probably be satisfied with the new system far deeper, but all who want that exact, control which I still think PS2 versions completed it best, will probably be disappointed in the beginning. PES 2010 is not something you just throw your self into and mastering it after two matches. I need more match hours before I am sure with my impression. So far, I am carefully positive.
